Getting logo from 99Designs.com

I have asked a few web designers if they would help for free – and all of them said they would, but only if I was a registered charity.  I got the feeling that web designers are asked to do free work quite a lot!

Because I am paying for it out my own pocket, I have put in approx £125.00 for my logo to be designed, and I have used 99designs.com.  I am looking forward to see what the various graphic designers will come up with.

On another note, the site is coming together well.  I still have some important features that I want to add before it goes into the real beta stage – but progress is looking good.  Sadly, no one outside my small personal circle has taken much interest in it yet, so I still have no real idea if this site will attract much attention or not.

Blog Categories

I have been thinking about how to categorise the blogs – the list I have come up with to start with is:

  • All Blogs
  • Animals and Pets
  • Business
  • Education
  • Entertainment
  • Family and Home
  • Funny
  • Health
  • Other
  • Personal
  • Politics
  • Recreation
  • Shopping
  • Society
  • Sports
  • Technology

Under each category users will be able to see the top blogs for Today, Last 7 Days, Last 30 Days and Last 365 days.

I have decided that we will authorise each blog submitted – so we have a quality gate which will prevent the usual spam/porn/Viagra/ etc. type blogs from being submitted.

One thing I am considering is charging people £1.00 to become members of the site.  This isn’t just to do with generating revenue – it also means that I can ensure that they are genuine people and not just trying to spam the system.  I need to think about this more – would this put you off from posting a blog?  Or would you see it as helping the site in that people will think twice about the blogs they add.

I am looking for a graphic artist to help me with some of the artwork on blogrelief.com.  In return for your work,  you will be added to the “Team” page, so everyone can see that you have helped with the development of BlogRelief.com.

If you are interested in helping, please send me an email – marc@blogrelief.com

We need a logo, and some banners.

Now looking for beta testers

Ok, we are nearly there with the main “Version 1.0″ functionality.  So I am now looking for beta testers.  If you are interested (i.e. you have a cool blog that you want to show off and help me at the same time!) then please send me an email.

I had expected to be live with version 1 – today, but as this is a project I am doing in my spare time, it is taking a little longer than expected – too much real work to do!!!  So I am now hoping to go live with a beta test in the next few weeks.

Added some new features

As well as a “Top Blogs” page – tonight, I have added Top Blogs for “Top Today”, “This Week”, “This Month” and “This Year”.

I have also started changing the menus around a bit to make the site better to navigate.  The next thing I am going to do is add in the “New Blog” pages.

I can’t decide at the moment whether to charge people to add blogs or not.  I want people to use the site, so I wouldn’t charge very much – and the money would go to charity.  But I don’t want to put people off using the website – and if they have to pay anything at all, they just might not bother to use the site.

I am also now looking for about 50 testers – so if you are interested, please register to join.

Your Favourite Charity

Searching for “charity videos”

I have added a “Charity Videos” section to the front page.  I want to have about 10 videos for people to watch.  Video is such a good way to get a message across, although I wonder who created the videos and how much was spent on them.  If you know of any good charity based videos please let me know.  I will update the videos every month.

I found a very good website called – http://www.guidestar.org.uk/ it says GuideStar Uk is ”the first place to look for comprehensive information about every charity – from the largest national charity to the thousands of small charities that are active in every community”.  So I will be using GuideStar to research different charities.

Other site progress:

1) The site now has friendly urls – this will help with SEO
2) Added a popup feature to show content such as video
3) There is now a “Who’s Online” feature

My next step is to add the complain button, and the different blog views.  I am also going to start contacting a few charities to find out if they think this is a good idea or not – I will offer them a profile page, where they can tell us about their charity and why we need/should support them.

To Collect Gift Aid You Have To Be A Registered Charity?

It looks like I need to be a registered charity to collect “Gift Aid” which I don’t really want to do – but if I collect all the relevant information and pass that onto a registered charity then surely they can collect the “Gift Aid”?

More Things To Do

Continuing my list from yesterday:

7) I need to build a variety of Top Blogs lists

  • Top blogs this month, week, today, etc.
  • Top blogs in category nnn
  • Blogs with most comments this month, week, today, etc.
  • Etc.

8) Introduce an Opt-In newsletter system

9) Add a “Who’s Online” facility – this will just list the number of members online, visitors online, etc.

10) Start producing the copywriting and content for the site.

11) Add Google Analytics

Ok – well, that’s five more to the list.

A Few Thoughts and Things To Do…

Tonight I have been looking the things I need to do before the site goes live.  Here are the most important activities:

1) Determine how charities will be chosen.  I had considered setting up my own charity – but then I started to read about how to set up a charity and came across this page: http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk/registration/think.asp - which says:

“There are around 190,000 registered charities, and perhaps as many again smaller unregistered ones. One or more of these may very well be doing the kind of charitable work your new charity would do, and in the same area.

Many charities often find it difficult to get access to the limited funding that is available to the charitable sector and this can be a particular problem for new charities. This is because local authorities, the public and organisations who give money to charities often prefer to give to charities that they are already familiar with and which have a proven track record.

Many people, including potential funders and donors, think that there are already too many charities competing for too few funds and that a significant amount of charitable resource could be saved if charities pooled their resources and worked together.”

So it makes sense for me to support existing charities – the only question is which charities?

2) I need to find out more about “Gift Aid” – I found some information on the Government website and  ”Just Giving” website.  I can collect information, such as Name, Address, Charity, etc. and I assume that I just need to pass these details onto the charity with the donation amount – and then let the charity sort out the “Gift Aid” element of the donation.  One thing is for sure, I need to make sure that “Gift Aid” is included – or I believe it will put people off wanting to donate.

3) The Blog Voting System is almost there.  I need to add in some extra features, such as add a complain button for inappropriate Blogs and Comments.  Also, I only want to promote Blogs in the Blog voting system – hence the “Blog” bit in “BlogRelief.com” so I need to add a confirmation checkbox in the submit form asking the user to confirm they are actually submitting a blog.  I will also have a “This is NOT a Blog” button – to allow members to signal that a “non-blog” has been submitted.

4) I really want to add in other features to the site that can also be used to generate revenue.  Some of my ideas are:

  • Competitions
  • Business Sponsorship
  • Charging business bloggers to submit their blog (not much though – and the money will go to charity – and this might prevent pointless spamming!)  This would probably be accomplished via a subscription feature.
  • Engage with lots of charities – I had no idea that there is 190,000 + registered charities – and I also didn’t know that there was such a thing as an “Unregistered charity”.  So I would like to add a “Charity Profile” features, probably incorporating “Google Maps” or something similar if there is a geographic element to the charity – and also maybe picture libraries or audio/video.

5) Issue over upkeep, and marketing of the site.  I have limited resources (I am paying for the site out of my own pocket), I also want to give as much money as possible to charity.  But a little money will need to be spent on the maintenance of the site if it becomes successful – I will probably do some front page support sponsors for this.

6) Sales and Marketing.  So far (as of 6/6/2008) I have not really done any marketing – well the site isn’t finished yet.  But if you stumbleupon this site and you have sales and marketing skills and you would like to get involved then please give me a shout.
